What Is ADAS?
Advanced Driver Assistance Systems or ADAS are systems installed in your vehicle to help keep you safe while driving down the road. After you get your windshield replaced it is important that you recalibrate these system to ensure they are working properly. This will keep you and your family safe while driving to your next destination. Some of the features that will need to be recalibrate after the windshield replacement include: Forward Collison Warning (FCW), Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS), and Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC). All of these features operate from a camera installed on the windshield so they have a clear view of the road ahead.
Forward Collison Warning (FCW):
This ADAS will warn the driver if they are approaching a vehicle or object and are at risk of a collision. This feature can even apply the brakes and reduce the risk of impact or damage.
Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS):
This system will warn the driver if they swerve out of their lane, Some systems can even correct the steering angle to ensure the driver is staying within their lane.
Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC):
Adaptive Cruise Control allows the driver to remain at a certain speed and distance from the vehicle in front of you. The camera in the windshield will see how far the car is in front of you and will change your speed to maintain that distance.
Do you have ADAS?
With all the new features on cars today it can be hard to tell if you have these Advanced Driver Assistance Systems.
Here are a few ways to tell if your vehicle is equipped with ADAS:
While looking at the outside of your windshield do you see a triangular shaped cutout where the rear view mirror is?
Do you see any of the buttons below on your dash, steering wheel, or center console?
Does your steering wheel or seat vibrate when you veer out of your lane?
If so, then you do have ADAS!
Now you may be asking yourself “ADAS is a very important system, How do they recalibrate the camera after replacing my windshield?” Well there are two forms of recalibration, Static and/or Dynamic, and both are performed by a trained and certified technician.
Forward Collision Warning Icon
The FCW Icon will display on your dashboard. This button is usually located on the left side of the steering wheel
Lane Departure Warning Button
LDWS is usually located near the left side of the steering wheel on the dashboard. This feature can be turned on or off based off of the drivers preference. The LDWS icon looks like a car with two lanes on the side, some icons have the car departing from the lanes.
Adaptive Cruise Control
This feature is usually located on the steering wheel. Once set at a certain speed the vehicle will maintain that speed and distance. It will adjust with the speed of traffic increasing and decreasing speed as needed.
